Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to better understand the generation and transmission mechanism of the electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT).

Design/methodology/approach

A semi-analytical method was used to calculate the Lorentz force. Both the hypothetical magnetic field mirror method and the diffusion equation were adopted to solve the eddy current distribution by variables separation method in time domain. A three-dimension magnetostatic finite element model was used to calculate the static magnetic field and the relative permeability. And an experimental platform with a piezoelectric probe to generate and an EMAT to receive, the ultrasonic wave was set up to verify the distribution of the Lorentz force.

Findings

The Lorentz force at different time and in different positions of the steel plate can be easily calculated. The experimental results show a good agreement with the analytical results.

Originality/value

The accurate prediction of the Lorentz force provides an insight into the physical phenomenon of EMAT and a powerful tool to design optimum EMAT.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous experience is a critical factor affecting entrepreneurial activities; however, it has not been fully studied in the existing literature. This study attempts to comprehensively reveal the routes and mechanisms of occupational experience that affect entrepreneurial activities and assess the entrepreneurial potential of different occupational practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

By matching occupational characteristics with entrepreneurs' competence, this study proposes ten hypotheses about how occupational experience affects entrepreneurial entry and performance. This empirical study is based on the Occupational Information Network database and Chinese survey data. Factor and regression analyses were used in the empirical research.

Findings

This study verifies that different occupational practitioners have varied entrepreneurial potential. Occupational experience, including occupational uncertainty, market contact and social capital, gained from previous experience significantly affects entrepreneurial entry. Meanwhile, occupational characteristics, including management experience, marketing experience, social capital, financial capital, risk-taking ability and creativity, accumulated from previous experience, have a significant impact on entrepreneurial performance.

Originality/value

This study is a pioneering attempt to reveal the relationship between occupational experience and entrepreneurial activities. The transmission mechanism of previous experiences affecting entrepreneurial activities is comprehensively revealed by relaxing the assumption of a representative occupation. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for empirical evidence and have important practical value.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to contrast the capacity of tourism-specialized and non-tourism-specialized systems in small developing insular societies to achieve a well-being model aligned with the Agenda 2030.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical method of this work consists of a panel-corrected standard errors analysis for a total of seven Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to measure the contribution of both economic diversification and tourism specialization to well-being in the Agenda 2030 framework. Time period considered in the analysis include 2005–2019.

Findings

Linear and nonlinear relationships reveal the need to conjugate both tourism specialization and economic diversification in the 2030-development agendas of small developing insular societies as both represent a means to achieve a well-being model aligned with the Agenda 2030.

Originality/value

One of the main novelties of this work is that development is analyzed from a multidimensional point of view (standard of living, access to education and health services), as an integrated thinking that considers any tourism development model that defines a route with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030 as main destination in SIDS. Specifically, practical implications are given combining recommendations to foster development and face poverty (SDG-1), while inequalities situations are reduced (SDG-10) and decent jobs are generated (SDG-8). These implications also focus on strengthening local suppliers of goods and services from other sectors to be integrated into the destination value chain (SDG-2), ensuring access to education (SDG-4) and contributing to gender equality (SDG-5).

Abstract

Purpose

The selection of purchasing channels by wine consumers indirectly affects buying experience and satisfaction, therefore, it is of great practical significance to study consumers' preference on channel selection. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of consumer selection for purchasing channel and the corresponding influencing factors.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 2,976 valid questionnaires were collected by convenience sampling from 34 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of China in 2020 via the Internet, yielding a response rate of 82.2%. A categorical statistical approach was used to understand consumer's selection for each channel. Besides, binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the factors affecting consumers' channel selection.

Findings

The results show that Chinese wine consumers' main purchasing channels are as follows: supermarket/mall, wine specialty stores, comprehensive e-business flagship stores, comprehensive e-business individual stores, restaurants and short video and live streaming platforms. Estimation results showed that among the 12 influencing factors in 4 categories, consumers' education and some other factors significantly influenced consumers' decision on wine purchasing channels.

Research limitations/implications

Limited by time and experimental conditions, this study did not analyze the trend of wine consumers' purchasing channel selection. Future work would concentrate on multi-year data and conduct longitudinal comparative analysis.

Originality/value

This study innovatively subdivides the currently popular wine sales channels in Chinese market and conducts research related to consumer channel selection. The results of the study can provide reference for wine producers and distributors to update their strategic layout and also help various channels to understand the characteristics of their customer groups for targeted marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

This article examines the direct influence of employee’s perceived organisational support (POS) on student loyalty (LOY), exploring the indirect roles of total quality management (TQM) and information communication technology adoption (ADT) and moderating roles of government support (GOS) and co-worker support (COS).

Design/methodology/approach

The article constructs a research model along with postulations by combining both empirical and theoretical literature in multidisciplinary fields.

Findings

This paper proposes that POS will be positively related to LOY, and this positive relationship will be positively mediated by TQM and ADT jointly and independently. Additionally, GOS and COS will positively moderate between POS and LOY.

Research limitations/implications

This article offers suggestions for both academics and specialists in higher educational institutions for achieving LOY by applying POS, TQM and ADT as strategic tools. It also highpoints the crucial role of GOS and support from co-workers in achieving LOY. This paper lays the foundation for upcoming scholars to test this research model, empirically, in different higher educational institutions contexts worldwide.

Practical implications

By valuing contributions, caring about well-being and fulfilling the socio-emotional needs of employees, higher educational institutions stand the chance of achieving LOY via TQM and ADT. Additionally, POS can foster LOY under massive GOS and COS.

Originality/value

The article provides unique understandings into how TQM and ADT connect POS to LOY and how POS relates to LOY under varied levels of GOS and COS. It also highlights the theoretical contributions of the underpinning theories.
